This article titled “Android’s Market Share Is Literally A Joke” demonstrates exactly what happens you use the wrong metric to measure the value of something. It basically disses the Android operating system in favour of iOS citing (in a million different ways) the fact that while Android ships more, it is currently not bringing in that much revenue for Google or the phone manufacturers Yeah dodo! You don’t get money if you give something away for free The sad part of the analysis is the they’re measuring the value of the software platform by $$$ alone. Hardware today is by and large commoditized and people only pay extra when their convinced a particular device offers them something unique (as was the case with apple iPhones and as is the case with the Samsung Galaxy series). Most of the Android sales are happening in emerging markets that are just getting onto smart phones, that are just getting their first taste of data. This is a long term game for Google which is not about getting more $$$ through sales but rather becoming your go to source of information via the internet. Sure, Android has it’s flaws like a fragmented OS versions floating around but Google is trying hard to fix that . While Apple through iOS just earns money by selling overpriced hardware, what Google does is own your digital self, you want email - you got it, you data enabled messaging - got that too . This is Googles way of becoming platform agnostic by becoming the platform. And how does Google make money, same way as it has done since the start, using your data to target ads and make money.
Consumers may stop falling in love with the iPhones rounded corners or maybe they’ll realize that the phones are way too expensive, but they’ll simply never stop googling. By giving away android (and GMail, YouTube and other apps), googles servers are just waiting for billions of people in the developing world to turn on their data plans and start using the internet (and in the background, their shareholders are laughing all the way to the bank)
