LOTD #1: This because not-that is a bad pitch

Been taking a lot of interviews lately; when folks are asked why did they get into profession X, some respond with “Got into X because I didn’t like Y”. This to me sounds like a very poor way to explain your career choice. It paints the picture that you chose X not because there are some fundamental activities/problems in X that excite you but rather because you’re in X because you were unable to do well/go deeper into Y . Here you not only undersell yourself by not highlighting the things you like about X, you also undersell the whole X profession indirectly by conveying the message that people in X are in X because they couldn’t somehow be in Y!

To make the above post more digestible, you can replace X with design and Y with programming/development.
