Managing delays

Gantt chats about: What manager plans : Straight blocks “This is the plan” What he discovers: One line extra long “Whoops design took waay too long” What he tries to do: remainder liner bent to fit in “Guys we have to finish this by 30th” What actually happens: bent is smaller than expected, shoddier work “Because of the hurry we couldn’t polish the UI enough” What should’ve been done: move all other lines ahead “We realize that there’s been a delay, because of this our launch will postponed by X days. As we discovered, the causes of the delay were A, B and C. We’ve set in motion changes that should prevent this from happening again” Tips: Take responsbility. Dont let party X suffer for the delays of party Y. This not only leaves a bad taste in the mouth but also produces shoddier work. Your deadlines are super fixed? That constraint should propagate into the planning process. If you can’t handle an overall, add many small milestones to catch delays early and fix them.
