Technology without Imagination

A good example of rushing to shove technology without an imagination is this demo: (3) AI-Powered Travel Booking: How VAs Can Use AI to Plan & Book Travel - YouTube
It shows a chatbot asking for details that you normally enter using the very standard UI elements you have on travel websites and then generating an itinerary. Fun fact, there are itineraries available online so the LLM likely regurgitates one of the itineraries in its training dataset . And the worst part it leaves the ticket booking to me!

Fucking chatbots with question after question; lame as hell. AI for travel already exists today; it’s called secretaries. Only rich people have this AI today. To build something wow; we have to build the AI in the image of a good butler or mother who knows a lot about you.

Funny example:

Me: I feel like flying to Paris next month. Suggest some options?
AI: Stop trying to fill your life with vacuous entertainment that you showcase to your Instagram friends. I’ve booked you for therapy this weekend.
Me: What the? You’re right though.
AI: If only you were right more often

Practical example:

Me: I feel like flying to Cambodia next month. Suggest some options?
AI: I see! I feel this is short solo trip to get away from family after the Christmas love onslaught.
Me: You got me, just a quick getaway for tropical weather annd kayaking, nothing fancy.
AI: Great, I’ll find you some budget options but no layovers because you hate em.
Me: Sounds good.
AI: Cool I will share options today evening when you’re in less of a rush

..
AI: OK I found some flight and hotel options, total cost under $1200.
Me: (Interuppting AI) That’s easily within my budget, book anything
AI: As you command! There is a special offer to redeem your Chase credit cards, with your 120K and this offer, you’ll be able to cover the flights entirely.
Me: Oh nice find! Wait do I need those anywhere else?
AI: There is a family visit back home to Berlin in May. You could use the points there as well.
Me: Oh, we’re taking the train for that one. First multi-day train ride for the kids!
AI: Did not know that! So, it’s a go on using Chase points?
Me: Yes
AI: Aye aye captain; booking and tickets will be in your digital vault in a few minutes. You have 48 hours to cancel, so I will do double check what I booked with you tomorrow evening.

To build an experience like this, an “AI” will need access to my calendar, my digital wallet/some payment methods, my journal, a set of preferences, and general mood. Ideally, these interactions won’t require me to sit in front of screen . I should be able to do these interactions via voice while (say) cooking food or doing work in my house. The AI should also be able to do sarcasm and emotions . Every decision and task is not merely a mechanical act; but also has emotional reasons and weight. It should tune itself accordingly.
